How we verify every installer and repair engineer
Anyone can put a certification logo on their website. Green Rated exists so you don’t have to find out the hard way whether it’s real — we check every installer and repair engineer against the official registers before they’re listed, so you don’t have to.
Our 8-point check
Before any company — installer or repair specialist — appears on Green Rated, we check:
- Certification is real — verified directly on the official register, never taken from the company’s own website.
- Certification matches the work — an installer listed for heat pumps holds heat pump certification specifically, not just “something green”.
- The right qualification for the job — MCS certification for installation work (it’s what protects your grant), and the credentials that repair work legally requires, such as F-Gas registration for heat pump engineers and NICEIC or NAPIT for electrical work.
- Phone number works and is theirs — confirmed on the company’s own website.
- The business is genuinely established — trading history checked at Companies House.
- Reputation holds up — where a company has public reviews we record their Google or Trustpilot rating and review count, with the date we checked. Many genuine installers simply don’t chase reviews, so where there’s no public rating we rely on the official credentials above — a listing is never published on reviews alone, and never rejected for the lack of them.
- They genuinely cover the areas listed — no “nationwide” companies padding local pages.
- Every badge is earned — accreditations and manufacturer-approved badges (like Vaillant Advance or Tesla Certified) only appear if the company is on that scheme’s own official list.
Why MCS matters for installations
Government support — including the Boiler Upgrade Scheme and the Smart Export Guarantee — only applies when an MCS-certified installer does the work. That’s why we will not list any company for solar, heat pump, battery or solar thermal installation without current MCS certification for that technology. It protects your grant.
Repair is different: MCS is an installation standard, so for repairs and servicing we check the qualification the job actually requires instead. That means brilliant repair specialists appear on our repair pages — and never on our installation pages.
What the badges mean
- Verified — passed the 8-point check, on the date shown on the profile.
- MCS certified — current MCS certification, confirmed on the MCS register.
- Featured — the company pays for a more prominent position, always clearly labelled. Featured companies pass exactly the same checks as everyone else — verification can’t be bought, at any price.
Checks don’t expire quietly
Certifications lapse and ratings change, so every profile shows when it was last verified, and we re-check companies when we update the pages they appear on. Spot something out of date? Email hello@greenrated.co.uk and we’ll re-check it promptly.
Our checks confirm credentials are genuine — the final choice and contract are always yours, so get quotes in writing. See our Terms.
